The twelve essays in this volume highlight various phases in the work of the Baden-Baden doctor and sanatorium director Georg Groddeck (1866-1934). Be it as a writer, doctor or psychoanalyst: the founder of psychosomatic medicine and creator of the term Es challenges readers to this very day to engage in a discussion with his oeuvre.
“The paths of the Es are curious,” Groddeck writes, and these essays are an attempt to track down the traces of the Groddeck Es, his own and that of others. This they undertake from a cardio-psychological, obstetrical or proctological viewpoint, as well as from the viewpoint of literary science, philosophy and the history of psychoanalysis. The authors have uncovered some of the Es’s hidden and tortuous paths, and pointed up other (hi)stories behind the ostensible ones. Controversies surrounding Groddeck’s oeuvre also emerge.
The editors, Michael Giefer, medical doctor, psychoanalyst and historian of psychoanalysis in Bad Homburg, Otto Jägersberg, author and script writer for radio, cinema and television in Baden-Baden, Walter H. Krause, internist, psychosomatics specialist and philosopher in Kronberg, are members of the board of the Georg Groddeck Society.
